Family Portraits in the ‘Golden Hour’
Many people ask when is the best time for portrait photos. All photographers know that it’s the Golden Hour. So let’s talk about the Golden Hour. It’s well known among us photographers for a reason! I also refer to it as ‘the magic hour’ for family portraits on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
When is the Golden Hour?
The Golden hour happens when the sun is about to set or the sun has just risen. The last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise is when ‘the magic hour’ happens. The light is the best for photos at this time. This light is typically more flattering and soft. Skin tones are expressed in their fullness and the environment around is inviting. The light actually gives off a golden feel.
What makes the hour golden?
At other times of the day the sun is directly above or overhead. This means the direction the light is entering the camera changes. It is can be harsher, brighter and more intense lighting when the sun is coming from above. When the sun is low on the horizon it is smooth, dreamy and warm. When there are clouds around, the hour is still golden and the clouds can make for a wonderful sunrise or sunset.
What if it won’t work to shoot then?
If it doesn’t work to schedule your session for the golden hour that is ok. A professional photographer has the skills to work in all settings, with all types of light and get amazing photos. We may look for shaded trees or other environments where the light will be more filtered. The direction people are facing is important and background changes are key.
Other perks
There are often less people around outdoor settings and on the beaches during the golden hour. In saying that, one hour either side of sunrise and sunset is a glorious time to be out and about. There are often exquisite colours in the sky adding extra magic to your photos. Also, the golden hour is often out of typical 9-5 working hours which can make it more accessible for family portrait sessions.
